Here we have up for sale a very scarce 1915 The Lackawanna Leather Company Sales Catalog. This large folio catalog has super plates showing the arduous process of tanning leather goods. The last two pages are actual samples of their leather!. The cover is solid with light wear/soiling, but has NO tears or tatters. The spline is tight and intact with NO loose or missing pages. Found this on the web: In 1915 the Lackawanna Leather Co. of Hackettstown, NJ published an illustrated brochure, with 35 extensively captioned images, and two pages of actual leather samples, of their leather manufacturing process. Many studies have been published relating to various aspects of the history of bookbindings, bookbinding technique, book cloths, but until this brochure was brought to my attention in October 2020 I did not recall seeing an illustrated brochure describing the industrial leather production process. The Lackawanna Leather Co. produced leather for furniture upholstering; however, the tanning process would not have been that different for leather used in bookbinding, though bookbinders would not ordinarily work with leather of the same thickness. A digital facsimile of the brochure from the Getty Research Institute was available from the Internet Archive. From the brochure we may observe how very labor intensive the process was. For that reason it is my understanding that most of this leather production moved to "third world" countries.
