Description:

The Pelham bit features a mouthpiece that serves as an excellent alternative to snaffle or bristol mouthpieces. Its independent side movement allows riders to isolate one side, effectively lifting the shoulder. By working off the tongue and bars, this mouthpiece is particularly suitable for young horses that are learning to bend and balance.

Cheek Design:

The bit consists of a length of metal with two rings and a fixed mouthpiece attachment. The top ring is designed for headstall attachment, while the bottom ring is for the reins. The shank, measuring 5 inches, is rounded and angled toward the rider's hands, with the top (purchase) angled away from the horse. The ring at the top is squared to enhance stability.

Function:
Shanks provide leverage and are typically used in conjunction with a curb strap or chain. Depending on the mouthpiece, backward and upward pressure on the reins translates to downward pressure on the poll, pressure on the curb, and forward and downward pressure on the palate. The angled tops prevent discomfort or rubbing against the horse's head.
