1941 Press Photo Recruit Frank Ciminelli gets his rifle, the basic weapon.
This is an original press photo. Like Uncle Sam's other armed services, the U.S. Marines are expanding to face the national emergency. To accommodate men who want to sign up just for the duration of the emergency, the Marines are enlisting men in the U.S. Marine Reserve with the same pay, promotions, and advantages as those available to regular Marines. This series of pictures shows how one enlistee, Frank Ciminelli of New York, became a recruit. The camera follows Ciminelli from the marines' recruiting station in New York to the handsomely-equipped Recruit Depot at the Marine barracks on Parris Island, South Carolina, where rookies from the Eastern, Southern, and Central Recruiting Divisions are put through a 7-week training course.Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 11-13-1941.
