Carlo Naya (1816-1882) began early as a dagerreotypist in Prague around 1845 followed by a studio in Constantinople before settling in Venice in 1857.  In Venice he worked with publisher and photographer Carlo Ponti who distributed his images.  Shortly after that he opened his own studio and by 1868 he was at the Piazza San Marco successfully rivaling Ponti as one of the largest firms in Venice.
