French text containing letters dedicated to historical animals such as Androcles's lion, Nero's tiger, Ayesha's camel, and Jupiter's eagle among others. A charming work concerning their intelligence and peculiar qualities. Written by O Fournier.
Illustrated with numerous vignettes in text and twenty full page plates by Victor Adam. Collated, complete with additional illustrated title page and half title.
Dated from the only copy listed on Copac at the Victoria and Albert Museum libraries.
CONDITION
Rebound in quarter straight up grain morocco binding over cloth covered boards, with four raised bands and gilt tooling to spine. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, bumped to head and tail of spine, boards lightly marked. Internally, firmly bound. Odd light minor spotting to odd leaf, pages otherwise generally bright and clean.
