The previous Series C continued to circulate following decimalization in 1971 until this reduced-size Series D was introduced in 1978. From 1983 this short-lived denomination was gradually replaced by the £1 coin.

a. Green signature J. B. Page. Back guilloches are dark green at lower left and right (1978-80).
