DESCRIPTION

The first edition of this work. A comprehensive tone containing a detailed account of the history of diamond mines in South Africa by American mining engineer Gardner F William. He was the first trained mining engineer to be appointed in South Africa. 

This account is very sought after and is considered to be an important authoritative source to this day. 

The front free endpaper and half title were excised from this copy. All twenty-eight plates, of which three in colour, three double maps, and further illustrations in text are present.


CONDITION

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally a trifle rubbed with shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, rear joint cracked, closed tear along back strip, boards holding firm, boards marked to front and rear. Frontispiece with minor loss to lower margin, not affecting illustration. Internally. firmly bound. Minor spotting to fore edge scattered to occasional leaf only.
