DESCRIPTION

The first edition.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, five plates, and forty-seven steel engraving plates. 

Collated, lacking the large colour folding map to the rear. 

An interesting history of the Northern Pacific Railway, a transcontinental railroad. Construction began in 1870, finishing in 1883.  

This extensive history covers the first explorations of the West, and follows in great detail the construction of the railroad, which ran to about 6,800 miles.

Written by the American journalist Eugene Virgil Smalley, who begun working for the N.P.R. in 1882.


CONDITION

In a rebacked cloth binding, with the original publisher's boards and spine restored. Externally, generally smart, with discolouration due to damp stain to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light rubbing, with a few lighter marks to the boards and spine. A little discolouration to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
