This old bottle would of originally come with a one ounce dose, a SAMPLE or TRIAL SIZE size, of "MOTHER SEIGEL'S CURATIVE SYRUP". We've had a paper labeled version of this bottle which according to the label, contained a dose of this syrup. The name A. J. White was synonymous with old shaker - colony patent medicine products and this name appears embossed on antique medicine bottles that held Shaker products. Shakers = the United Society of Believers in Christ's second coming. This Christian group was founded way back in England in the 1700's and the were initially known as "Shaking Quakers" because of their ecstatic behavior during worship services. Early on Shakers settled in New Lebanon, New York. During the Shaker's peak in the mid-19th century, there were about 6,000 Shakers and they were skilled in the preparation of various types of medicines. The Shaker community of Mount Lebanon established its first medical garden in 1820. The Shaker reputation for high quality, pure drugs, led to a very successful venture and one of their early products, Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup, became one of America's most popular medicines, which this bottle is an example of, check it out!
