Following City on Fire and Prison on Fire, director Ringo Lam and Chow Yun Fat collaborate again for 1989's Wild Search. The crime and romance drama also reunites Chow Yun Fat with An Autumn's Tale co-star Cherie Chung. Though Wild Search does feature action scenes and Roy Cheung as the villain, the film is less action-oriented than Ringo Lam's usual, instead focusing more on character drama and the chemistry of the stars.

While conducting a raid of an illegal arms deal, police detective Lau (Chow Yun Fat) discovers the body of a dead woman and a crying girl who witnessed her mother's murder. Believing that the girl may be in danger, Lau seeks out her aunt Cher (Cherie Chung) in order to protect both of them. The three develop a comfortable bond as Lau and Cher gradually fall in love. However, Cher's ex-husband and a vengeful gunrunner (Roy Cheung) soon show up to disrupt their short-lived peace.
