This antique piece possibly may be an Amish Whale Oil Can. I found similar items in each possible category.  But I did not find an exact match.

The can does not smell like oil. (And I have no idea what whale oil smells like.)

This antique Black Metal Railroad Oil Can measures approx 8 1/4" tall with its lid.

It is approx 5 1/4" in diameter.

It measures approx 10" from the tip of its spout to the edge of its handle.

The top opening is approx 3" diameter.

This antique can does have obvious age-related wear.

The wooden knob on the lid has a split in it, although it is still intact. As shown in the pictures.

The tip of its spout has a split in the metal. Also shown in the pictures.
