Near Fine Riviere Bindings. half black morocco with corners, gilt double rule to all leather edges, over marbled boards. Spine with five gilt decorated raised bands, gilt author/title to gilt fancy framed second compartment, gilt vol# to fancy gilt framed third compartment, fancy gilt frames with fancy corners framing a centered gilt filigree to each other compartment other than the sixth at the foot which has a gilt Aldine Dolphin centered to compartment, fancy gilt rule head and foot of spine. Minor edgewear, corners slightly bumped, boards with rubbing (see pic). Vol.II was bumped to top of textblock resulting in some tiny dog-eared pages (pg. 33-53, 407-434). Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. A beautiful signed binding by Riviere.
From Wiki: John Fitchett (21 September 1776 - 20 October 1838) was an English poet. The epic poem King Alfred was Fitchett's major life's work. He spent forty years researching and writing it. It was printed at Warrington for private circulation at intervals between 1808 and 1834, in five quarto volumes. It was cast in the form of a romantic epic poem, the subject being the life and times of King Alfred. He did not live to finish the work, but he left money for printing a new edition, and the work of supervising it was undertaken by his friend Robert Roscoe. Roscoe completed the poem, adding 2,585 lines. The entire work contains more than 130,000 lines.
