"We're No. 1!" - Shelby and Dave Melius lead line after their 5-day wait in Jefferson - Champagne flowed in front of at least one Jefferson Parish mortgage company this morning as happy would be borrowers celebrated the end of their six-day wait to apply for low-interest loans. The approximately 2,000 persons who camped out in lawn-chair settlements in front of lending institutions in Orleans and Jefferson parishes since last week were packing their sleeping bags, electric fans and televisions this morning as they prepared to take that important step forward home ownership, applying for a mortgage.
