1968 Press Photo Site of and plaque at Fort Massac in Metropolis, Illinois
This is an original press photo. Metropolis, Illinois: Implementation of a master plan for restoration of Fort Massac State Park, as Metropolis, is asked in a bill passed by the Illinois General Assembly and awaiting Governor Kerner's signature. It would rebuild the old fort, first constructed by the French in 1757, as the central attraction of a modern state park and memorial to George Rogers Clark. Site of the fort figured prominently in one hundred years of colonial and American history. Originally planned by the French in 1703 to command the Ohio River and the mouth of the Tennessee, it passed to English rule in 1764 and was used by Clark as the springboard for his conquest of the Northwest Territory in 1778. It was finally abandoned by the American Army in 1814. Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated 7-3-1968.
