The text of this song is a poem from the Latvian teacher Julie Hausmann (1826-1901), allegedly a visually handicapped woman. From this point of view, the subject matter of the song becomes a very personal experience. Perhaps that is why it is often used as an elegy. The themes of this song – blind faith in God, death and eternal life, and shear life with each other – make this piece suitable for funerals as well as weddings.
Friedrich Silcher’s melody and the style in which he arranged the song are of a modest simplicity – along the lines of the great romantic tradition of Wagner and Bruckner. This arrangement can be performed ad libitum in combination with a mixed choir.
