MONTE IRVIN - QUESTIONNAIRE SIGNED - HFSID 290888
MONTE IRVIN
Detailed handwritten response to questions about why his Giants won the pennant in 1951
Questionnaire signed: "Monte Irvin", 2 pages, 5x8½. His handwritten response to two typed questions about the 1951 season. 1) [asked to describe the exciting 1951 season] "The kind of season every baseball player should experience - 13½ games in August behind the Dodgers. Caught them on the last day for a tie. Thus a 3-game playoff. We were behind 4-1 in the 9th inning. We scored 4 runs in the 9th inning to win 5-4." 2. [asked to name the most important things enabling the Giants to win the pennant] "1. Willie Mays joined the club in May. 2. "Leo Durocher got the pitching staff squared away. 3. Whitey Lockman and I changed positions. I moved from 1st base to left field, Whitey from left field to 1st base. Don Mueller, Alvin Dark, Bob Thomson & I had good years." 3. [asked for other comments] "1. Durocher had a career year managing. 2. Mays became the best CF in baseball. 3. We became a family - If one player failed - the next player tried very hard to get the job done. That's why we beat the Dodgers.". After baseball's color line was broken in 1947, Monte Irvin (1919-2016) became the fourth black player signed to a Major League team. The ballplayer was a four-sport star in high school and was even offered a scholarship to play football at the University of Michigan. Nevertheless, he stuck to baseball, playing for the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League. From 1938 to 1942, he played for the Eagles and, briefly, for the Azules de Veracruz of the Mexican League. After serving in the military from 1943 to 1945, Irvin returned to the Newark Eagles and helped them defeat the Kansas City Monarchs to win the 1946 Negro League World Series. In 1949, the fielder became one of the first black players to sign to an MLB team. He joined the New York Giants, later mentoring his teammate Willie Mays when he joined the team. Hank Thompson, Willie Mays, and Irvin formed the first outfield entirely composed of black players. As a member of the Giants, Irvin helped lead the team to a 1954 World Series win. Irvin was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. Fine condition.
