DESCRIPTION
The remarkable Imperial edition of the collected works of William Shakespeare, edited by Charles Knight. In two volumes. Dated from Jisc 1873-1876.
Also featuring a biographical sketch of the life of Shakespeare, carefully revised biography by Charles Knight to volume two, with separate title page, contents list, and pagination.
Illustrated with stunning illustrations on steel from pictures by C W Cope, W P Frith, C R Leslie, et al.
Volume I contains a notice of the original editions of the plays, comedies such as 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona,' 'The Taming of the Shrew,' 'A Midsummer night's Dream,' 'As You Like It,' &c. and histories such as 'King John,' 'King Richard II,' 'King Henry IV,' and others.
Collated, complete with frontispiece as well as additional vignette title page and twenty-six full page plates.
Volume II continues with the histories, and includes an essay on the three parts of King Henry VI and King Richard III, as well as comprising tragedies such as 'Romeo and Juliet,' ;King Lear,' and 'Antony and Cleopatra,' poems e.g. 'Venus and Adonis,' 'A Lover's Complaint,' and plays ascribed to Shakespeare such as 'Locrine,' 'King Edward III,' 'The Puritan,' and 'The Birth of Merlin.' This volume also includes a brief notice of opinion in the writings of Shakespeare and thorough indexed.
Collated, complete with frontispiece, additional vignette title page, and sixteen full page plates.
CONDITION
In uniform half straight up grain morocco bindings with gilt lettering to spine, 'Imperial Shakespeare' blind stamp to front boards. Externally boards lightly marked and rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor faint staining marking to margins of plates, not affecting illustrations, as well as odd light minor spotting to occasional leaf; otherwise pages generally bright and clean.
