The Day of the Dog consists of a piece from Michael Frayn's column in the Guardian. This piece gained him his reputation. Critics and readers claim that there is more to his writing than entertainment. He writes with great levels of depth and complexity.

On the Outskirts is a collection of comic essays from his Guardian and Observer column. In the 1980s a number of them were adapted and performed for BBC Radio 4 by Martin Jarvis.

Sweet Dreams tells the story of a man who dies and goes to heaven. Within heaven he is tasked with the responsibility of designing a geographical landmark. It is the story of discovery and exploration.
