These little oval shaped hand blown pill bottles are always popular among collectors. They were made in this shape so they could easily fit into a pocket or purse but as time when on, they were eventually replaced with tin containers and eventually paper tubes, much like Tums or Rolaids come in today. Like Tums and Rolaids, these were Digestive Tablets for treating heart burn, upset stomach, dyspepsia, indigestion, etc. This is the earliest version of this bottle, it is embossed CURES LIVER ILLS, whereas the newer examples are embossed FOR LIVER ILLS not CURES LIVER ILLS. As time went on, the Pure Food and Drug Administration was keeping an eye on this product, because the next style of this bottle no longer makes the fraudulent 'CURE' claim, but merely states FOR LIVER ILLS not CURES LIVER ILLS. A super nice example of this much sought after little bottle here, especially in this beautiful TRANSLUCENT PURPLE color. You hear about old glass turning purple in the sunlight ... this little bottle has been exposed to a high heat/light source to enrich the purple color that would naturally occur if exposed to sun light for a prolonged period of time. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make it a great looking little bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique, check it out!
