Each includes 2 sets of rubber sleeves 1 X Storage case What kind of bearings do I need for a camshaft? When installing cam bearings, always work your way from the rear of the block forward. When fitting aluminum cam bearings, it’s important to allow sufficient bearing-to-camshaft clearance, since the harder aluminum alloy bearings won’t wear in as rapidly as babbitt bearings to make their own clearance. How are cam bearings installed into a block? Installation of cam bearings into the block must be done carefully to avoid shaving material from the outside diameter of the bearings. This can easily cause a buildup of excess material between the bearing and the block’s bearing bore, which will “squeeze” the bearing, resulting in oil clearance reduction at the bearing inside diameter. When do you start the cam bearing selection process? The installation process begins after you’ve accomplished any machining that might be needed (cylinder boring and/or honing, align-honing, deck resurfacing, cam bore alignment, etc.). Before starting, make certain that the block is totally clean. Camshaft Bearing Installation and Removal Tools The right tool can make any job easier, and for the press-fit bearings your camshaft rides on, the right tool is a camshaft bearing installer. Sometimes called a bearing knocker, these tools let you tap the bearings into (or out of) the bores with your favorite hammer. universal camshaft bearing installation tools are used to remove and install camshaft bearings in nearly all automobile engines, from compacts to heavy-duty trucks. They take the difficulty out of bearing replacement and drive camshaft bearings smoothly. The expansion sleeves grip firmly and are easy on new bearings. The expander and the split driving plates have replaceable rubber sleeves. Determine the size of the bearing I.D. 1. First choose the correct expanding driver from the listing below. Place the expanding driver onto the expander assembly. Be sure to line up each of the segments of the driver with the separa- tions on the expander assembly. Lubricate the smooth side of the rubber sleeve to help with putting the driver on the expander 2. Next place the nylon centering cone over the driving shaft. Now screw the expander assembly and driving washer from above on to the shaft. The kit comes with a driver shaft extension; this may be needed for removal of the rear bearings. 3. Place the expander assembly into the front of the block and tighten the expander on the first bearing for removal, typically the front of block is done first. Be sure to tighten until snug in the bearing. 4. Center the cone in first bearing housing and drive bearing out. Loosen the expanding driver assembly to relieve pressure and pull tool back through the next bearing to be driven. Repeat the NOTICE: Some blocks have a sealed cam valley making the camshaft inaccessible except from the ends.
