This is a brand new Sterling Silver Candle smoked mother of pearl brooch that has been set with marquersites.
Candle smoking is an old Victorian pastime usually done on wet days when you could not go outside. Basically you hold a piece of mother of pearl over a smoking candle until it is black with soot and then painstakingly scrape off areas of soot so that an image is left.
The artist that created this image is Maurice William Crawshaw who is a Sheffield based artist from the UK.
After the image is created which in this case is a dog or cat silhouetted against the moonlight it is encased in a special resin to protect it.
Brooch = 50mm x 35mm
We are having a clear out pre retirement and these are surplus to requirements now.
This brooch is fully hallmarked for sterling silver and will be presented in a gift box with an information leaflet on the artist who we believe is the last person doing candle smoking now.
