Autograph Letter signed: "George Trumbull Ladd", 2 pages (integral leaf), 5x6 New Haven, 1913 October 24. To "Dear Mr. Vigitelly", in full: "I thank the Funk and Wagnalls Company, and you personally, for gift of the New Standard which came to me yesterday. [Following sentence bracketed and underlined in colored pencil (unknown hand)] It is a volume on which anyone may gaze with wonder and admiration; but one in which anyone connected with its making, may feel no small amount of pride. About a fortnight ago I wrote a letter to the Company, from Fort Wayne, commending to all most highly the New Standard. If you will view it over and indicate to me any ways in which you would like to have this letter modified or supplemented, I will gladly undertake to meet your wishes. [Another bracketed and underlined sentence follows.] It is an altogether splendid piece of work, and I, who know to some extent, who know to some extent how greatly it is indebted to your work, offer you my heartfelt congratulations. Sincerely yours". George Trumbull Ladd (1842-1921), a prolific author of books on religion, philosophyand psychology, was professor of metaphysics and moral philosophy at Yale from 1881 to 1901. Japan's Emperor Meiji conferred on him two high Orders of the Rising Sun, the first foreigner to receive the second highest class of this award, for his influential lectures there, and his services as advisor to the Japanese government. In the US, he was an early and influential exponent of experimental psychology. The Funk & Wagnalls Company (founded 1877) published reference books, especially dictionaries and encyclopedias. In 1912, it published a 25-volume encyclopedia, undoubtedly the work Ladd is praising here. Purchased by several other media companies from the 1960s onward, Funk & Wagnalls made its last literary contribution as the text for the first edition of Microsoft's on-line encyclopedia. Red pencil marks throughout letter. Mounting residue on verso. Corners lightly creased and worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
