Victorian Native American Iroquois Hand Beaded Whimsey Hanging Wall Pocket, Dated 1910s

Antique Victorian era Iroquois beaded whimsey hanging wall pocket, an early example, dated 1910's, with excellent hand sewn raised bead work. These are all are elaborately beaded in a sunburst and leaf motif, with hanging fringes. Bead colors are shades of green, white, light brown, and blues and silver sequins. Recently deaccessioned from the Strong Museum in Rochester New York State. Still retains its original cloth sewn in museum catalog information tag.

CONDITION

This wall hanging is in good condition with wear commensurate with age, with no holes on front material, no fading to background front fabric, some bead loss only at top edge, beaded fringes are in tack with no loss and no discoloration to the back, but has small holes, most likely where the hanging bead strand was at one time and is missing now. This piece is stuffed with thick stiff cardboard for strength. Please review the images to thoroughly assess condition. 

APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS

Measures 8-1/2" x 7-1/2" at its widest point not including the 1-3/4" fringe loop bead work at bottom. The open pocket measures 6" across and approximately 3" deep.

HISTORY OF SOUVENIR BEADWORK
"Native American “whimsies” are beadwork attributed to Woodland Indian women during Victorian times, which were made them for sale as souvenirs in Iroquois areas and Niagara Falls. Beaded bags and non-utilitarian “whimsies” became an important source of income for Iroquois women helping to support their families....The early 19th century saw the creation of bags, pincushions, moccasins and picture frames decorated in simple geometric and floral designs.
During the mid-19th century – as Iroquois survival was threatened by land appropriations, the loss of traditional trade opportunities and other economic hardship – the Iroquois developed new types of beadwork items made to appeal to tourists visiting Niagara Falls. Sometimes entire families were involved in making these souvenirs.
