The USS Chopper was a Balao-Class submarine of the US Navy that was in commission from 1945-1969. Her career ended due to damage from a near fatal accident. The sub sunk down to a little over 1100 feat due to electrical problems that caused it to sink into a near vertical dive. Once the crew were able to pull it out of the sinking dive, they rose nearly vertical upwards, cleared the surface like a breaching whale rising out of the surface. This momentum carried her down to nearly 200 feet after cresting. She then leveled off and resurfaced. The sub was able to return to port but had so much crushing damage that it was not fit for duty and was decommissioned in1969.

This jacket and a cap that I have in another listing were both purchased at the estate of a retired Navy man that served on this submarine. There were hundreds of items related to this ship and his naval career. I was only able to get these two items in the frenzy of people purchasing the Naval memorabilia.
