About the Garmin vívosmart 5

The vívosmart 5 is the simplest and most affordable way into the Garmin ecosystem. It strips away GPS and smartwatch complexity to focus on what most people actually use: steps, heart rate, sleep, stress, and Body Battery. The 66% larger grayscale OLED display over the vívosmart 4 is a real upgrade — text is actually readable. A new physical button alongside the touchscreen makes navigation easier, especially during workouts or when your hands are wet. Swappable silicone bands replace the fixed integrated band of the prior model.
Body Battery shows your energy level from 0 to 100 throughout the day, combining heart rate variability, sleep quality, stress, and activity data to tell you when to push and when to rest. Sleep tracking automatically detects light, deep, and REM stages each night and shows a sleep score with coaching tips in the morning. Pulse Ox monitors blood oxygen overnight. Incident detection can send your live location to emergency contacts if the tracker detects a sudden impact; the Assistance feature can be triggered manually.
The vívosmart 5 does not have built-in GPS — it uses Connected GPS, borrowing your phone’s GPS signal for outdoor route tracking when your phone is nearby. There is no Garmin Pay, no music storage, and no color display. No subscription is required; all health data is free in Garmin Connect. The slim band design makes it one of the most comfortable Garmin devices for all-day and overnight wear. ANT+ heart rate broadcast works with compatible gym equipment and Peloton.

Does the vívosmart 5 have built-in GPS?
No — it uses Connected GPS, borrowing your smartphone’s GPS signal for outdoor route recording when your phone is nearby. Without your phone, it estimates distance via accelerometer but no route map is saved. For built-in GPS, the vívoactive 5, vívoactive 6, or Venu 3 are the next steps up.
What size band do I need?
Measure your wrist circumference: S/M fits 127–204mm (about 5–8 inches); L fits 158–236mm (about 6.25–9.3 inches). Both contain identical hardware — only band length differs. If your wrist is in the 158–204mm overlap, either works; most people in that range prefer S/M for a snugger fit.
Does it require a subscription?
No subscription required — ever. Body Battery, sleep score, stress, Pulse Ox, HRV data, and Garmin Coach training plans are all free in the Garmin Connect app. The price you pay at checkout is the complete cost of ownership.
Can I swim with it?
Yes — 5 ATM rated to 50 meters, safe for pool swimming, open water, and showers. The pool swim activity profile tracks laps, distance, and pace. The touchscreen may not respond when wet, but the physical side button works in water.
