In 1974 Capital Publishing Company issued what has turned out to be a very elusive 110+ card set. According to our hobby's reliable baseball card price guides, the set ranges from 104 to 110 cards and the last handful of cards seem to be considerably scarcer than the others (one guide, the Standard Catalog, doesn't even list them and lists another number "unknown"). Over the years we have owned two sets - neither of them truly complete - if completeness were to include all variations.
This card measures approximately 4-1/8 by 5-1/4 inches and features black and white photograph on the front with detailed statistics and frequently (as room permitted) an excellent biographical sketch headed by the player's name in distinctive script font. The card stock is reminiscent of the mid-1930's Goudey Wide Pens (R314) and National Chicle Fine Pens (R313) - somewhat thin but good quality. Photo selection also offers (in some cases) unusual, seldom seen poses and action shots.
One particularly interesting feature included on most of the 1974 Capital Publishing Co. cards is the listing of player transactions involving the featured player - a rarity on baseball cards.
This scarce card is perfect for collectors of favorite players/teams, type card collectors or general baseball hobbyists.
Hint: Check eBay's listings (current and recently completed) for [player name + card number] + CAPITAL PUBLISHING and see how rarely this particular card has been offered for sale.
Condition: Excellent with stain at top (reverse side) - check the high-resolution scans, front and back; the pictured card is the one the buyer will receive. (Note: a blue background has been included which is not part of the card but provided so corners and edges may be evaluated.)
Collecting Tip: We have found standard (2 pocket sheets) which hold cards up to 5" by 7" fit these cards well.
ANY number of single cards (up to and including 8" X 10" in size) will ship for the one single card USPS Ground Advantage cost IF the buyer will request and wait for a combined invoice before paying. Also available is eBay standard envelope service for qualifying orders. Questions? Email us.
Periodically we experience problems with our scanner. Today is one of those days. Depending upon which view you choose, the first scan will show horizontal lines, wavy and/or cross hatching marks. Rest assured, these are not on the card itself.
THE LAST SCAN: Our last scan is a picture of all-time baseball great Ted Williams with The Baseball Hobbyist's Steve Mitchell at a 1983 Connecticut sports collectors gathering - Ted's very first-ever collector event. On the second day of the show "The Splendid Splinter" visited with collectors and dealers and graciously posed for this photo. For U.S. customers (on most items) we combine multiple items purchased so you pay only the shipping charge on the heaviest item - all other items ship free of charge.
