The RVR315 does one thing: it detects vehicles approaching from up to 140 meters (153 yards) behind you and alerts you well before they arrive. When a vehicle enters the radar zone, colored moving dots appear on your Edge screen showing position and speed. Your ride computer or watch gives you time to prepare, move over, or signal — all before the car reaches you.
The RVR315 is the radar-only version of the Varia lineup — it has no built-in tail light. This makes it the right choice for riders who already run a preferred tail light and don’t want to replace it just to add radar. It’s also the lightest Varia at 51g, making it nearly invisible on the seatpost.
Dual ANT+ and Bluetooth LE connectivity works with Garmin Edge computers, compatible Garmin smartwatches, the Varia smartphone app, and third-party devices from Hammerhead and Wahoo. IPX7 water resistance handles rain, puddles, and wet road spray. The quarter-turn seatpost mount installs and removes in seconds.

Does the RVR315 have a tail light?
No. The RVR315 is radar only — it detects vehicles and sends alerts to your paired device but does not emit any visible light. You need a separate tail light for visibility. This is the key difference from the RTL515, RearVue 820, and RCT715, all of which include a built-in tail light.
Why would I choose the RVR315 over the RTL515?
The RVR315 is for riders who already have a preferred tail light and just want to add radar detection without replacing it. At 51g it’s also lighter and more compact than the RTL515 (71g). If you don’t already have a tail light, the RTL515 is the better value — it adds a 65-lumen light with the same radar for less than the price difference would suggest.
Is the radar quality the same as the RTL515?
Yes, the same generation of radar technology with a 140m detection range. The beam width is slightly narrower at 40 degrees vs 45 degrees on the RTL515. For practical purposes the vehicle detection experience is very similar — you get the same reliable alerts for approaching vehicles.
What devices are compatible?
The RVR315 pairs via ANT+ and Bluetooth LE with compatible Garmin Edge computers (Edge 540, 840, 1040, 1050, and others), select Garmin smartwatches (fēnix, Forerunner, Enduro, etc.), the Varia smartphone app on iOS and Android, and third-party computers from Hammerhead and Wahoo via ANT+.
