ITALIAN BAROQUE PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING
GIOVANNI FRANCESCO BARBIERI (1591 - 1666) GUERCINO (ASCRIBED)
THE PENITENT MAGDALENE
This stunning Italian Baroque Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to the circle of Guercino, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591 - 1666) and
it is ascribed verso. The painting is a religious scene of a penitent
Mary Magdalene, her glistening eyes cast to the heavens and her hands
folded in prayer. The artist has captured a wonderful lushness to her
hair as it cascades down her gown. A truly majestic painting. The
painting has old Edwardian Christies auction stencils and is ascribed
Guercino verso.
Condition. Oil on canvas 29 inches by 25 inches and in good condition.
Provenance. Private collection.
Christies London
Frame. Housed in a complementary early period carved frame 40 inches by 35 inches. A fantastic frame.
BIOGRAPHY
Giovanni
Francesco Barbieri (1591 - 1666), better known as Guercino, or il
Guercino, was an Italian Baroque painter and draftsman from Cento in the
Emilia region, who was active in Rome and Bologna. The vigorous
naturalism of his early manner contrasts with the classical equilibrium
of his later works. His many drawings are noted for their luminosity and
lively style.
