                                                                               GENERAL INFORMATION

Wodyetia bifurcata, the foxtail palm, is a species of palm in the family Arecaceae., native to Queensland, Australia. It is the sole species in the genus Wodyetia.

The Foxtail Palm is a tall elegant species that likes full sun but will tolerate part shade. When young it is better to grow them in the shade. They have deep roots and watering should be deep when planted outdoors. They prefer a well drained soil and will grow in alkaline limestone soils and rocky sands. They like to be well mulched but not around trunk. They will handle light frost but should be protected when in pots. They do prefer loose, sandy granite soils with tropical conditions and a prolonged dry season but can also be grown in sub-tropical and warm- temperate climates. The best growing conditions are with well drained slightly acidic soils.

They are extremely sensitive to excessively wet soils, especially when the palms are grown in containers. Overwatering can cause fungal diseases, nutrient deficiencies and splitting of the trunk and stem rot at the base in containers.

Foilage is blue - green with a fluffy look, 2-3m plumose leaves thus being referred to as a Fox tail.

The palm is drought and wind tolerant and self pruning. If pruning is desired then only prune dead fronds when they are completely brown. Premature trimming can cause nutrient deficiencies. When grown in containers avoid overhead watering as this can cause leaf spot.

Palms should be fertilised quarterly with slow release N-P-K of 8-2-12 make up. Also add extra slow release potassium and plenty of micro-nutrients if required.
