DESCRIPTION
The second edition of this work, which was first issued in 1576. This is the first edition to have the maps and is regarded to be the best edition. This edition is the only edition to have the folding beacon map which shows the system of early warning to danger to England.
To this work Lambarde discusses the history of Kent, touching on pre-Conquest history and its geography. There is also mentions on the justice system, taxation summary, fairs, poorhouses and more. Lambarde also gives an account of religion and the archbishops. Nearly all of this is presented on a parish by parish basis. The DNB refers to this work as 'a model of arrangement and style'.
An article by Art Historian Bernard Denvir notes that Lambarde was 'a pioneer in the discovery of Anglo-Saxon' and that this work is a 'landmark in political and economic history' in addition to being a 'human and readable book'.

Charles Sandys (1786-1859) was a Canterbury based solicitor and antiquary. He was also penned several works on Kentish history

Early underlining in ink and pencil, and occasional 17th century marginal manuscript annotations, and manuscript index of 'Stories out of ye legend' at rear.
With a woodcut map and the folding map as called for. The folding map indicates the beacon system for signalling danger from the coast to London, which is only present in this edition. Folding map is closely cropped at the top and bottom margins.

William Lambarde was an English antiquarian whom Elizabeth I made Keeper of the Records in the Tower. This work became a standard of County History, and Lambarde also wrote several important legal works.
A comprehensive very early history of Kent and a very important work in the context of the county history genre.
CONDITION
In a full vellum binding. Externally, sound with several marks and patches of light rubbing to boards. Vellum is slightly soiled and discoloured as is common with this binding type. Spine is lifting to the head. Worming to the rear joint. Hinges are weak. Bookplate to the front pastedown for Charles Sandys and to the verso of title page. Front endpaper, tipped in frontispiece and title page are detached but present. Otherwise, internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. The folding map to page 71 is closely cropped affecting the bottom of the image. Occasional annotations from prior owner which comprises of underlinings and the odd marginal notes. Occasional cross drawn to the margins. Small chip to the bottom margin of Aa4. The odd spots to pages.
