Wood engraving is generally taught via apprenticeships as it is not offered as a course of study in the academic art world. I studied with Stefan Martin (1936-1994) of Roosevelt, NJ in 1976. Generally, wood engravings are small, average size would be around 5"x7" due to the extensive amount of time it takes to engrave. A one inch square area could take hours to complete. Wood engravings differ from woodcuts as the blocks are cut on the endgrain, not the plank (as in a woodcut). The tools and inks are also different; burins are used instead of gouges and a very hard, tacky ink is required so the fine lines and dots are not filled in, thus achieving the crisp, clean image." A nice piece for the collector or decorator. See pictures, selling as found. Please email with any questions, I am happy to combine shipping on like items.
