DESCRIPTION

In fourty volumes.

With a decorative title to each magazine and a black and white photograph of a memorial statue to Mr. Gladstone in Westminster Abbey by Thomas Brock, R.A. to frontispiece of 1903 volume.

The periodical includes the diary of the month, tables of facts, notes and figures, articles, bills of session, points from speeches, Government Blue Books and returns and announcements.

With the announcement and tribute to George V to1936 volume.

The Liberal Party was one of the two major political parties of the United Kingdom during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was the third largest political party throughout the latter half of the 20th century. The party moved towards social liberalism during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and came to be seen as being on the centre-left of British politics.

Augustine Birrell PC, KC (19 January 1850 - 20 November 1933) was an English politician, barrister, academic and author. He was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1907 to 1916, resigning in the immediate aftermath of the Easter Rising.

With previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper of 1895 volume.


CONDITION

First two volumes in a cloth binding, all other volumes in quarter morocco bindings with cloth covered boards, most with gilt lettering. Externally, generally sound with bumping and wear to extremities and marks to boards of some volumes. With staining to half the volumes, more heavily to approximately ten volumes. With water damage causing warping to boards and text block to approximately seven volumes. Rear cloth torn and lifting to 1918 volume. Slight loss to spine to three volumes. Joints strained to two volumes. About four hinges tender, five hinges strained and four slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound with straining to some volumes. Generally bright with slight scattered spotting to some volumes, and foxing to endpapers of most volumes. With a closed tear to front free endpaper to 1902 volume. Five volumes (1904-6, 1914, 1916) are ex-library copies from Newport public library with bookplates to front pastesdowns and ink stamps to endpapers and some pages. With one previous owner's label to front pastedown also to one volume. With ink stemp from East Dorest Liberal Association to 1919 volume, and the Liberal Registration Office to 1920 volume. With some cracking and loss to spine of 1916 volume with ink inscription in gold filling in missing lettering.
