Besides narrating the biography of the author, it attempts to evaluate American life as he has witnessed it during the 53 years prior to publication. His observations and comments are entirely his own, and leave it to the reader to draw his own conclusions .
Main thesis: American education went astray because it has side-tracked Classical education and is sailing without a rudder.
