Being offered on this auction is
decorative oval double cigarette ashtray made by Herend,
Hungary.
This is a part of most popular Rothschild Bird collection. It features
nesting birds and insects. Tray has white
background and gold outline. Rothschild, one of the best-known patterns,
takes its name from the fabulously wealthy family. The tale says that
Baroness Rothschild lost her pearl necklace in the garden of her Vienna
residence. Several days later her gardener found it when he saw birds
playing with it in the trees. There are twelve different motifs that
portray a 19th century tale of the Baroness Rothschild. Several
branches of the baronial Rothschild family regularly ordered services in
this décor from the 1850s onwards. The backside is marked with standard
Herend blue mark used in c. 1915 - 1930. Other marking is mold number
‘7784/RO’ in blue and 73 in black on the backside as well as incised 7784
and ‘Herend’.
Ashtray measures about 3” x 4 ½”.
