RICHARD DOWNER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - HFSID 81016
RICHARD DOWNER. ALS: "Designed by Richard Downer" and "Richard Downer" 16 times, 1p, 8½x11. London, 1973 November 3. On his business letterhead to Victor Croxford. Downer has written in a rectangular and then circular pattern around two stamps he has affixed to his letter. In full: "I was very interested in receiving your letter, which explains in great detail your activities in past and recent years. It made fascinating reading. I can imagine you recording cassettes on your tours of the empty courtrooms, perhaps on (sic, one) day I shall hear your comments on the radio. Thank you for the various paper cuttings. I shall keep them in my collection. I shall naturally [be] delighted to send you my signature. I have had many requests for my signature along my two stamps. Yours is the first request to sign a reproduction of the actual stamps. I felt it only correct to return two actual stamps to you with my compliments and my signature. I have left sufficient white space surrounding the stamps for cutting out and sticking into your collection. Sad to say though, these stamps are no longer on sale. They were a special issue commencing on the 12th September until the end of October. Today is the 3rd November. May you have many more enjoyable hours making your historical recordings, and I feel an honor that I should be included in your valuable collection. On my next visit to Brighton I shall make a point of visiting the public library to discover in their archives the Victor Croxford collection. I hope by now you are still sitting comfortably on the chair, and not laid out in a dizzy confusion due to my letter in response to yours. Thank you for your best wishes, may I wish you the same best wishes for wealth and happiness, and your continuing interests. Yours sincerely." The two stamps affixed were the first commission from the Post Office for British designer and illustrator Richard Downer. The stamps, which were first issued on September 12, 1973 at Croydon, Surrey commemorated The Great Britain Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference, held in London in 1973. Downey's designs for the stamps were executed from aerial photographs and his first-hand references of the Palace of Westminster, and he also designed the actual First Day Cover and the presentation pack for the limited edition issue. Eleven years earlier, he had published Drawing Buildings. Lightly creased at upper margin (not near writing). Fine condition.
