A 6 inch tall UNIQUE OVAL/Tear Drop/TURTLE-shaped translucent PURPLE AMETHYST colored antique BABY or NURSING bottle.  This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating back to the 1800's.

This is a just a great looking antique nursing bottle. It was designed to lie down next to a baby, and had a thin rubber hose that came out of the bottle, inserted into a nipple, and the baby could lie down and suck on it. Not long after this bottle design came into existence there started to be hygienic problems with it. Even though the bottle could be cleaned of aged milk, the tube/nipple feeding apparatus could not, and became a breeding ground for bacteria that led to tragic consequences so this type of bottle was discontinued. As a result there's not a whole lot of them around as they were in service for a short time. These are also referred to as turtle nursers as they somewhat resemble a turtle with his head up. The 'N. WOODS' stands for Nathan Woods, an early day PORTLAND MAINE merchant.  Then there is the beautiful deep purple color? You hear about old glass turning purple in the sunlight ... The beautiful purple amethyst color of this bottle is the result of being made with manganese in the glass, a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass that acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass.  Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color.  With few exceptions, only glass made before 1914 will turn purple.  Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique; a great and unique looking antique nursing bottle, check it out!
