Samuel Sloan (1815-1884) was a professional architect who began his career as a carpenter and moved rapidly toward designing and supervising building projects. Early in his career Sloan worked on institutional building exposing him to some of the few professional architects working in America. Sloan residential building career began when he conviniced Andrew McCalla Eastwich to hire him to build a new mansion, Bartram Hall, an immensely successful project. From 1851 to 1857 Sloan built many of the houses in West Philadelphia particularly in and around the area known as Hamiltonville. In the 1850s Sloan began to publish his ideas with drawings and plans. His books, with lithographs by the famed Philadelphia lithogrpah firm of P. S. Duval. Duval's firm was the first to have steam powered equipment and the first is renown for its collectible lithographs. Sloan's books on Architecture sold quite well late into the 1870s with modern versions of his work still in print today. Sloan was also prominent int he design and build of school houses and insane asylums.
