About this quarter

The original Rhode Island quarter 25-cent coin was issued in 2001.

Rhode Island was the third state to be admitted to the Union, on May 29, 1790.

The design features an image of vintage sailboat in Narragansett Bay, with the Pell Bridge in the background.  Rhode Island is known as the sailing capital in the world, and hosted the America's Cup for more than 50 years.  

How was this cut coin made?

This quarter has been hand-cut-out with a tiny saw blade -- not cut by a machine or laser. First several holes were drilled thorough the coin surface, then a coin cutter with decades of coin cutting experience used a jewelers blade to "cut away" the background, leaving the remaining design as you see. The cut coin design remaining is that part of the coin "un cut."

The original coin came from the same coins you see every day, but the those areas your see in the photo that are darker have been removed -- cut away -- creating a pendant for use a jewelry.  Then it has been used as a pendant.

You cannot spend it any more -- it is now jewelry.
