Artist: George Cruikshank (1792–1878) Title: Mabel Lyndwood Interceding for Sir Thomas Wyat with Henry Date: Probably early 1840s, associated with William Harrison Ainsworth's historical novel Windsor Castle (1843). Image size: Approximately 139 × 98 mm

Description

A dramatic Tudor woodland scene depicting Mabel Lyndwood pleading with Henry VIII on behalf of Sir Thomas Wyatt. Cruikshank's composition includes armed men, fallen figures, hunting dogs and deer, with a huge tree dominating the background.

The illustration carries Cruikshank's printed signature beneath the image and retains its original decorative Gothic-style caption. There is restrained colouring in the costumes and landscape, although I would describe this as apparently hand-coloured, rather than claiming certainty without examining it in person.

Condition

Appears generally good for its age, with attractive wide margins. Some light foxing or discolouration and minor wear along the edges, particularly the upper margin. The engraved image itself appears reasonably clean.
