An Illustrated Children’s Classic

One of the particularly appealing features of this collection is the wonderful presentation of Ernest H. Shepard’s illustrations in colour.

Shepard’s drawings have become inseparable from Milne’s characters. Their delicate lines, expressive figures and understated humour capture the innocence and charm of the original stories in a way that has endured for a century.

The four volumes feature attractive pictorial dust jackets decorated with colourful illustrations, while the accompanying white slipcase is ornamented with blue-toned reproductions of familiar characters and scenes.

Together they form an attractive, coordinated collection that looks lovely displayed on a bookshelf.

Publication and Edition Information

These are later printings of Methuen’s illustrated colour editions, rather than first editions of the original 1920s publications.

The two poetry volumes are from the colour editions first introduced in 1989, while the two Winnie-the-Pooh story volumes are from the illustrated editions first issued in 1973 and 1974.

The copyright pages provide the individual publication histories, including the original publication dates, illustration credits and reprint information.

All four volumes were published by Methuen Children’s Books, an imprint of Reed Books, and printed and bound in China.

Condition

Good vintage used condition overall, with the original illustrated dust jackets and matching slipcase present.

The collection displays attractively, although there are signs of age, storage and previous handling.

* All four hardback volumes are present, each with its illustrated dust jacket.

* The dust jackets retain their attractive coloured illustrations, with visible creasing, minor marks, rubbing and general edge wear.

* Some jackets show more noticeable creasing and small wrinkles, particularly towards the edges and across the front covers.

* The exposed page edges appear generally clean and tidy, with some minor unevenness visible along the upper edges.

* The illustrated slipcase remains intact and holds all four volumes.

* The slipcase displays general surface marks, rubbing, corner bumps and wear around its edges and opening, including the lower corners.

The set has the pleasant character of a previously owned collection while retaining considerable decorative and reading appeal.
