📌 DESCRIPTION
Personnel recovery is one of the U.S. military’s most demanding operational responsibilities. This U.S. Army Africa (USARAF) Personnel Recovery Coordination Cell challenge coin identifies a specialized coordination element connected to the mission of locating, supporting, and recovering isolated personnel. Its significance extends beyond a conventional Army unit coin, combining a specialized operational mission with the historic identity of a command that no longer operates under its former designation.
The Personnel Recovery Coordination Cell (PRCC) supports the planning and coordination necessary to respond when personnel become isolated, missing, detained, or separated from friendly forces. Such efforts can require coordination among intelligence, aviation, communications, command-and-control, recovery forces, and other military capabilities. In an operational environment as geographically extensive and complex as Africa, personnel recovery demands disciplined coordination and the ability to integrate multiple resources.
The obverse prominently displays U.S. ARMY AFRICA across a green enamel map of the African continent, accompanied by the Lion of Saint Mark, the historic symbol associated with the Southern European Task Force (SETAF). The winged lion, sword, and book connect the design to SETAF’s military heritage and the command structure that supported Army operations in Africa. Surrounding the artwork are the inscriptions PERSONNEL RECOVERY COORDINATION CELL and U.S. ARMY AFRICA.
The reverse communicates the mission through the five established personnel recovery execution tasks:
REPORT • LOCATE • SUPPORT • RECOVER • REINTEGRATE
These tasks form the framework for responding to personnel-isolation incidents, from initial reporting and locating isolated personnel through recovery and reintegration. A traditional African shield with crossed spears dominates the central design, flanked by the POW-MIA emblem and the multicolored U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) insignia. Together, these elements connect the coin’s mission identity to the larger military command responsible for operations across the African continent.
An additional historical distinction is the coin’s U.S. Army Africa designation. In November 2020, U.S. Army Africa and U.S. Army Europe consolidated under U.S. Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF), while the former U.S. Army Africa headquarters became SETAF-AF. The older command identification gives this specific design particular relevance to collectors documenting the evolution of U.S. Army operations and military command structures in Africa.

🧭 CONDITION & PHOTO NOTES
This U.S. Army Africa Personnel Recovery Coordination Cell challenge coin retains well-defined raised lettering, vibrant green and multicolor enamel, and detailed SETAF and AFRICOM insignia, with natural antiqued finish variation, light surface marks, and minor edge wear visible from prior handling. The African map, winged lion, crossed spears, and five personnel recovery tasks remain clearly defined, giving this 1.75-inch coin an attractive overall display appearance.
The substantial raised metal borders, recessed textured fields, and contrasting enamel create clear separation between the military insignia and central artwork. Both sides retain strong visual detail, including the smaller POW-MIA emblem and multicolored AFRICOM insignia.
