Danish 8 øre on 3 øre grey provisional stamp, catalogued as AFA 117, issued in 1921–22.
This stamp was created by applying a large black “8” surcharge to an existing 3 øre grey stamp of Denmark’s long-running Wavy-Line design. Rather than producing an entirely new stamp immediately, the Danish postal administration converted existing lower-denomination stocks into the required 8 øre value.
AFA 117 forms part of a small and distinctive group of Danish provisional issues in which several earlier stamps were surcharged to 8 øre. The underlying design is one of the most recognizable Danish definitive designs of the period, combining the denomination with stylized waves and elements of the Danish national arms.
The large black surcharge makes these provisionals particularly characteristic of early-1920s Danish postal history and visually quite different from the normal definitive issues.
