Connolly: A Marxist Analysis
Andy Johnston • James Larragy • Edward McWilliams
Irish Workers Group, Dublin – 1990
An unusually scarce original physical copy of this independently published study of James Connolly, issued by the Irish Workers Group in Dublin in 1990.
This is not a modern reprint or print-on-demand edition, but the original 1990 paperback publication, complete with its distinctive illustrated cover depicting James Connolly, Karl Marx and Wolfe Tone.
A Scarce Piece of Irish Political Publishing
Physical copies of Connolly: A Marxist Analysis are notably difficult to encounter.
Produced by the Irish Workers Group rather than a large commercial publishing house, the book had a comparatively specialist audience and circulation. While the work has subsequently been preserved digitally by historical archives, surviving original printed copies are much less commonly encountered on the second-hand book market.
That makes this an interesting acquisition not only for readers studying James Connolly, but also for collectors of:
* Irish political history
* James Connolly material
* Irish socialism and labour history
* Marxist and Trotskyist literature
* Irish revolutionary history
* Easter Rising / 1916 material
* Small-press Irish political publications
* Ephemera and publications of the Irish Left
About the Book
Written by Andy Johnston, James Larragy and Edward McWilliams, the book sets out to examine Connolly’s political thought from a Marxist perspective.
Rather than presenting a conventional biography, it considers the development of Connolly’s ideas and the relationship between socialism, nationalism, class and revolutionary politics in Ireland.
The contents include:
Introduction
Chapter 1 – Apprenticeship to Marxism
Chapter 2 – The Irish Populist Dimension
Chapter 3 – Labour and Nation in Irish History
Chapter 4 – The Irish Bourgeois Revolution
Chapter 5 – Fighting Shy of Religion
Chapter 6 – Socialism, Woman and The Family
Chapter 7 – The Protestant Working Class
Chapter 8 – The Party and the Working Class
Chapter 9 – The 1916 Insurrection
followed by an Epilogue and References.
It therefore covers a surprisingly broad range of themes in Connolly’s thought, including nationalism, labour history, religion, women’s emancipation, the Protestant working class and the events of 1916.
