1983 VIRGINIA INDEPENDENCE BICENTENNIAL MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE MEDAL - SCARCE

Vintage 1983 Virginia Independence Bicentennial commemorative medal honoring Marquis de Lafayette (1757–1834), one of the best-known French military leaders associated with the American Revolution.

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lafayette surrounded by “MILITARY LEADER,” “1757,” “1834,” and “MARQUIS DE LA FAYETTE.” The reverse features the distinctive Virginia Bicentennial logo with “INDEPENDENCE BICENTENNIAL,” “Virginia,” and “1975–1983.”

This medal appears to belong to the same 1983 Virginia Independence Bicentennial personality-medal series as documented Thomas Jefferson and Admiral de Grasse examples.

• Nickel silver is generally a copper-nickel-zinc alloy and is not precious silver

The composition has not been independently metal-tested, so nickel silver should be considered a well-supported series attribution rather than a guarantee of exact alloy content.

The medal shows light age and handling marks. The clear holder has visible scratching, haze/cloudiness and an old label/adhesive remnant. Some marks visible in the photographs may be on the holder rather than the medal itself.

This is a commemorative medal and not legal-tender coinage. Uncertified and ungraded. Please review the photographs closely as they are an important part of the description.
