4.2" hollow Septarian egg from Madagascar.  This stone is also known as Dragon Stone.  This 110mm tall egg includes a wooden tripod stand, carved from a single piece of wood.  These Septarian crystals were formed about 100 million years ago.  Decomposing sea shells had an attraction for the surrounding sediment, forming mud balls under the sea.  Tide and wave action rolled these balls around, creating sedimentary balls of a larger size.  As the ocean receded, the balls were left to dry and crack, allowing Aragonite crystals to form within them.  Often, yellow Calcite crystals form within the empty chambers within the sedimentary formations as well, but this material did not form the Calcite, allowing the dark brown Aragonite to form drusy crystals along its borders, hence the material is considered to be hollow.  The name Septarian is derived from the dividing walls (septum in Latin.)  This egg was then carved from this material in Madagascar.  Egg weighs over 2 1/3 lbs.  A great egg for display, collection, and study.
