On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in world history to fly into outer space. The Vostok launch vehicle carrying the Vostok-1 spacecraft—with Gagarin on board—was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. After a 106-minute flight, Gagarin successfully landed in the Saratov region. April 12, 1961—the day of Yuri Gagarin's space flight—was designated a holiday: Cosmonautics Day. (A1)
