We have received a Tokai TSG-60, an SG-style guitar manufactured in Japan in 1982—a true "Japan Vintage" instrument.
Tokai is highly acclaimed for its Les Paul-style models within the Japan Vintage market; indeed, their "LS" series from the same era often commands prices comparable to Gibson Custom Shop or Historic Collection models on the used market.
The TSG-60 is a faithful replica of the 1963 SG model, accurately reproducing features such as the small pickguard and the 22nd-fret neck joint, giving it the authentic character of an early SG.
It also features fret-edge binding on the fingerboard, making it an excellent choice for serious players who appreciate attention to detail.
Visual highlights include a headstock inlay with a tulip-like design—evoking the classic "crown" inlay—and a truss rod cover unique to this era.
Equipped with two Tokai '57 PAF Vintage pickups (featuring Alnico magnets), the guitar delivers a vintage-style rock 'n' roll tone.
Aside from the removal of the pickup covers and the replacement of some knobs, the instrument remains in its original condition.
Weighing in at a mere 2.93kg, it is incredibly easy to handle; yet, it possesses the dynamic resonance inherited from Tokai's renowned LS series. Combined with the vintage-style pickups, it produces a dry, pleasing sound.
The finish is an Olympic White with a distinct yellowish hue, which pairs with the zebra-colored pickups to create a sophisticated, classic look.
Cosmetically, the guitar shows signs of use consistent with its age, including dents and minor scratches.
While about 70% of the fret life remains, the neck has a significant twist and the bridge has warped over time; consequently, the setup has been optimized by adjusting the nut slots and bridge saddle slots. The current string action at the 12th fret is approximately 1.8mm on the low E side and 1.5mm on the high E side, making it playable as-is; however, due to neck twist and bridge warping, the instrument is prone to fret buzz. Consequently, if you wish to lower the action, procedures such as fret leveling or a bridge replacement are recommended.
