"General View of the Agriculture of the County of Suffolk" (1797) is a landmark text in British economic history and agricultural literature. It was commissioned by the Board of Agriculture, a government-backed institution established in 1793 by Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger to modernise British farming practices during the pressures of the Napoleonic Wars
Historical Context: In 1794, Young printed a brief, 92-page preliminary version of this survey in a quarto layout to gather feedback from local farmers. This 1797 edition printed by B. Macmillan is the vastly expanded, definitive first octavo edition (and the true commercial first edition). It serves as one of the six foundational contributions Young personally wrote for the Board's famous nationwide county survey project.
