Features and Provenance: Our coin was mint under the rule of Philip I also known as Philip the Arab and was emperor for only five years from 244 to 249. His reign is remarkable for its domestic stability and, along with his son, he oversaw the 1,000th anniversary celebrations of Rome in 248, however, he was a weak military leader. His son, Philip II, pictured on the coin, was made caesar at the age of 7 and co-ruler a little later. When his father died in battle in 249 , most historians agree that Philip II was murdered by the Praetorian Guard at the tender age of 12 and he was only sole emperor for a few months.
