Set in Hawaii near the Kilauea volcano, the story follows a young Hawaiian boy named Kimo and his grandmother. When scientists warn the local village to evacuate due to an impending volcanic eruption, Kimo's grandmother refuses to leave. She believes that the eruption is merely her close friend, the volcano goddess Madame Pele, turning over in her sleep and that she will not cause them any harm.
